Towards a Reformulated Theory Underlying Schema Therapy: Position Paper of an International Workgroup

Abstract Background A central construct in Schema Therapy (ST) is that of a schema mode, describing the current emotional-cognitive-behavioral state. Initially, 10 modes were described. Over time, with world-wide increasing and broader application ST to various disorders, additional identified, mainly based on clinical impressions. Thus, need for new, theoretically based, cross-cultural taxonomy emerged. Methods An international workgroup started from scratch identify an extensive modes, (a) extending theory underlying new insights needs, (b) recent research supporting represent combinations activated schemas coping. Results We propose add two emotional needs original five core underpin development early maladaptive (EMSs), i.e., Self-Coherence, Fairness, leading three EMSs, i.e. Lack Coherent Identity, Meaningful World, Unfairness. When rethinking purpose behind different ways coping EMS-activation, we came up labels those: Resignation instead Surrender, Inversion Overcompensation.
